Technique to produce drinking water from storm water
11:59 PM // 0 comments // ngsk // Category: News , Science //Water is the main source of life, without water no living organism can survive long. Now a day due to deforestation and by many human activities there is a fall in ground water levels which are causing scarcity for drinking water.
At so many parts of world people are fighting for drinking water. To avoid the scarcity of water different governments are forced to take different types of steps like building dams to control the flow of water into ocean, and asking the people in country to have rain harvesting systems in heir premises and so on.
There were so many researches going on to produce drinking water from different sources, like reverse osmosis method to produce drinking water from ocean water and so on. Today scientists came with a new method to produce pure drinking water from storm water by combining natural and engineered ways of purifying.
International scientist’s team lead by Dr Peter Dillon carried out a research where they captured water from City of Salisbury, on the Northern Adelaide Plains in South Australia and stored under Salisbury in a porous limestone aquifer some 160 meters below ground. When they recovered this stored water after few months found that this water is meeting all the standards of drinking water.
Explaining the process the lead scientist Dr. Dillon said, the storm water was first treated by passing it via a reed bed or wetland which allows particles to settle. Then this was injected via wells into a limestone aquifer for storage and months of natural slow filtration through the aquifer. After recovery, the water was rigorously tested in National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) accredited laboratories. For extra safeguard and aesthetic quality, the water was aerated, filtered through an activated carbon filter and it underwent microfiltration and ultraviolet disinfection. This is a good news as this method avoids the economic, social and environmental costs of building dams for water storage but also allows the governments to avoid the scarcity of drinking water and spend the money which they are investing in building dams can be used for other purposes to improve the living standards of people in their countries.
This recharge water compiled all the same health standards as that of bottled water as per the scientists. And also this storm water harvesting is the cheaper, cost efficient and has small carbon footprints.
Hats off to all scientists who are continuing researches that help mankind, instead of developing products which are hazardous for mankind.
