Smoking 'can help create stronger memories'
6:14 AM // 0 comments // ngsk // Category: News , Science // If you had a habit of smoking you will be getting advices from your family members or from your dear friends to quit the habit saying that Smoking is injurious to health.Tobacco has long been known to have a stimulating effect on the brain. Victorian doctors recommended smoking as a means of sharpening the wits and boosting concentration.
But now Scientists in a new study also claimed, that it can help create stronger memories. They also mentioned that because of the deadly effects of smoking, causing cancer, heart and brain stroke neglected the medicinal research on tobacco.
This discovery offers hope of a nicotine pill that mimics these effects to treat Alzheimer's disease. But the new treatment would not be a cure for Alzheimer's disease. At best it will only give patients a few extra months of independent life.
Researchers, led by Baylor College of Medicine, have carried out the study and found that remembering what happened the night before might be easier for smokers as compared to non-smokers. This statement was given by scientists after,Professor Ian Stoleman, from the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College, London, has shown that nicotine can improve the performance of rats in an intelligence and memory test (this was tested by training rats to respond to a brief flash of light by standing in an area )
According to lead researcher Dr John A Dani, The brain sends a reward signal when we act in a way that contributes to our well-being. This can be done by nicotine, the addictive component in cigarettes, which "tricks" the brain into creating links between smoking and a feeling of well-being.
British newspaper The Daily Telegraph reported that scientists said that events such a drinking alcohol, dining with friends or even driving home from work can act as cues that give people the urge to light up.
Experts are developing drugs that copy the active ingredients in tobacco that stimulate the brain without causing heart disease, cancer, stroke or addiction, hoping that the new drugs, which will be available in five years, could have fewer side effects than existing medicines for dementia.
The study has appeared in the latest edition of the 'Neuron' journal.
This may be a happy news for the Smokers but be careful scientist said that the drugs will be prepared by copy the active ingredients in tobacco that stimulate the brain without causing heart disease, cancer, stroke or addiction but not by using tobacco directly, so be please be health consious.
By this new studies, gives an hope that science may not only help in finding the cure but also in converting health damaging items into helpful items.
