Based on the book 'Q and A' by Vikas Swarup and screen written by the famed author of 'Full Monty' Simon Beaufoy, this movie is a winner all the way. With subtle spoof on Bolywood and Mumbai life, director Danny Boyle and Loveleen Tandan have presented a great movie without any top actors acting. The story is about a slum boy (referred to as a slum dog) from the famous Dharavi slum, who chances on the Indian version of who wants to be a millionaire. Each question he answers 'becomes' the story, is contextualized by it, and the audience understands the 'bizarrely plausible' way of the story becoming believable. It's like peeling away the onion skin to reach the crust when the crust itself is unimportant at the end.
Full credits to the screenwriter and the editor, the story is seamless, with interweaving narratives – of the rich and poor, intellectual and illiterate, child and adult, powerful and the weak, rags and riches, technology and street-smartness. Even when the language moves from Hindi to English, the transformation is barely noticeable.
You have to watch the camera work, as it is skillfully done, giving the audience a view of the complexity of Mumbai life. Whether it is a child' eye'-view of the slum life, the wide angle shots of the dhobi-ghat's, the top-down view from the high-rise's, the fade-away's from reality to TV studios, the cinematography is a treat.
This movie will entertain you in a very different sense. Some reviews suggest that the lead actors did not perform well. But it is absolutely rumour less
Rehman's music is always on top. But you will be pleasantly surprised by Anil Kapoor's stellar performance. He revels in sarcasm, and mockery, enthralling the audience with a 'sophisticated English diction' that can flatter any outsider.
